- ISM is the home of the world's oldest, still floating steel warship, Cruiser Olympia
- The first banana offered for sale in the United States was sold in Philadelphia in 1876.
- The real Ben Franklin Bridge needed approximately 15,000 gallons of paint, 61,700 tons of steel and 618 lights in its four-year construction. In contrast, the museum's replica used only 150 gallons of paint, 2,000 feet of aluminum square tubing, 140 sheets of wood and no lights. The replica took 1,000 hours to build.
- Philadelphia, still considered a seaport, is 90 miles from the ocean.
- Some of the rivets used in ISM's exhibit, Home Port Philadelphia's "Of Wood, Iron and Steel," were used in the restoration of the 1877 tall ship, ELISSA, out of Galveston, Texas.
- Philadelphia was the fourth largest port of entry into the United States in the early 20th century.
